Welcome progress in the medical field: software robots help life sciences
Researchers at Harvard University and Boston Children's Hospital have teamed up to develop a software mechanism that helps the heart beat and pump blood without contact with blood. This customizable flexible device, or the birth of a new heart failure treatment program, is a boon for heart failure patients. Related research is published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
Heart failure is a very common heart disease. There are 41 million people worldwide suffering from heart failure. They may need a heart transplant or need to use ventricular assist devices (VADs) to pump blood from the ventricle to the aorta. Although ventricular assist device technology is constantly improving, so far, the risk of thrombosis and stroke in patients using these devices remains high.
Inspired by the mechanism of cardiac function, researchers have developed this new flexible device. The device is mainly composed of a silicone hose, a flexible pneumatic transmission device and an air pump. The researchers used a combination of inhalation devices, gel interfaces, and surgical sutures to wrap the hose around the heart, just like the outer muscles of the heart. The hose is connected to the surrounding flexible pneumatic transmission device, and relies on the power provided by the external air pump to simultaneously contract and expand the rhythm of the heart beat to assist the heart to pump blood, thereby enhancing the cardiovascular function affected by heart failure.
Unlike existing ventricular assist devices, this new device does not directly contact the blood, which reduces the risk of vascular occlusion. Patients who use the device in the future do not have to take potentially harmful blood thinning drugs.
