Can I collect fingerprints without touching? Japan developed a new technology device for detecting fingerprints
Release date: 2015-03-02
When the police investigate the case, it is very important to collect fingerprints. Researchers at Waseda University in Japan have collaborated with the Science Police Research Institute to develop a new device that can quickly detect fingerprints without touching, and can be identified even if two fingerprints are superimposed.
When fingerprints were previously collected, fingerprints were often used to spread the fingerprints. However, these methods may destroy useful DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) substances attached to articles with fingerprints, and it is also difficult to distinguish overlapping fingerprints.
This study uses hyperspectral imaging technology to emit a green laser with a wavelength of 532 nm that has little effect on DNA to the target. By observing the color difference of the reflected light, the shape of the fingerprint can be distinguished. Even if there are two overlapping fingerprints, they can be distinguished by 70% accuracy due to slight color differences.
Since the lipid and amino acid components of the fingerprint change over time, their response to light changes, so the technology can also understand when fingerprints are retained.
The device is the size of a suitcase and is easily transported to the crime scene. In the future, the research team is ready to continue to improve and strive to make this device practical in 2017.
