The content of the study is to develop interventions to prevent or minimize the potential negative effects of air pollution. The results of the study were published online on PNAS on the 13th (click on the bottom left corner to read the original text).

Researchers from the TH Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University, as well as researchers from China, Sweden, Singapore, Mexico, and Canada, have revealed how to prevent the negative effects of PM2.5 at the individual level. These findings have important implications for public health in areas where PM2.5 problems often occur.
Â
Dr. Andrea Baccarelli, professor of environmental health science at the Mailman School of Public Health, said: "People have not fully understood the molecular basis of the impact of air pollution on health. The lack of prevention at the individual level also indicates a huge gap in this part of the knowledge. Our research goal is Develop preventive measures to minimize the negative impact of air pollution on potential mechanical markers. Due to the important role of epigenetic modifications in mitigating environmental impacts, our findings may also be extended to other contaminants and environmentally related diseases."
Â
The WHO estimates that 92% of the world's population lives in places where air quality does not meet WHO standards (PM2.5 < 10 μg/m3).
Â
PM2.5 in the environment is one of the most serious air pollutants because they deposit in the respiratory tract, causing inflammation in the lungs and throughout the body. Although the PM2.5 content has been significantly reduced by extensive control of emissions policies over the past few decades, the negative health effects caused by exposure to PM2.5 are still frequently recorded.
Â
Jia Zhong, a postdoctoral researcher in the Environmental Health Sciences Department, said: "The impact of air pollution on health and the way it affects has brought many complicated problems. Before we can solve this problem from the individual health level, we will completely solve this problem. There is still a long way to go."
Â
The researchers recruited adults to participate in the trial, taking a placebo or vitamin supplement (2.5 mg folic acid, 50 mg vitamin B6, 1 mg vitamin B12) daily. To prevent interference testing, volunteers must be healthy non-smokers and between the ages of 18 and 60, without taking medication or vitamin supplements.
Â
Plasma vitamin B tests before and after the test showed that taking vitamin B supplements significantly increased folic acid (56 nmol/L; IQR: 13; P = 0.02), vitamin B6 (428 nmol/L; IQR: 321; P = 0.004) and Mean plasma concentrations of vitamin B12 (511 pmol/L; IQR: 85; P = 0.01). For volunteers who took placebo for 4 weeks, their mean plasma concentrations were: folic acid 39 nmol/L (IQR: 24 nmol/L, P = 0.82); vitamin B6 37 nmol/L (IQR: 18 nmol/L, P = 0.75); vitamin B12 262 pmol/L (IQR: 214 pmol/L, P = 0.42). All exposure experiments were performed at the same time of day.
Â
Environmental particles are introduced from a busy street in Toronto's urban area (more than 1,000 cars per hour). These particles are delivered through an "oxygen type" mask. The researchers collected blood samples from volunteers and tested the blood using Infinium's human methylation 450KB eadChip chip.
Â
Dr. Baccarelli said: “Although emissions control and regulation are the main pillars of environmental pollution prevention, pollution is still very serious in many large cities around the world. As individuals, there are few options for protecting ourselves from environmental pollution. Further research was conducted to validate our findings and ultimately find preventive measures that use vitamin B to prevent the health effects of air pollution.
