Edinburgh scientists in the UK screened nearly 80 genes related to depression by analyzing the health data of the UK Biobank. The research team led by the University of Edinburgh analyzed data from the British Biobank, which contains 500,000 health and genetic information. They scanned the genetic code of 300,000 people and identified areas of DNA that may be associated with depression.
Studies have found that some well-targeted genes are involved in synaptic functions, and these tiny connectors allow brain cells to communicate with each other through electrical and chemical signals. Subsequently, the scientists obtained donor consent and confirmed their conclusions using 23andMe's personal genetic information data.
Andrew McKintosh of the Center for Clinical Brain Science at the University of Edinburgh, who directed the study, said: "Depression is a common and serious disease that affects millions of people around the world. These findings help us better. Understand the cause and show how big data from the UK Biobank can help promote mental health research."
