In a new study, Lei Li, an assistant professor at the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Washington State University, and his research team developed a low-cost portable cell phone lab that simultaneously analyzes multiple samples to capture a cancer. The Li team developed an eight-channel smartphone spectrometer capable of detecting human interleukin-6 (IL-6), which is known for its lung cancer, prostate cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer and epithelial cancer. Although smartphone spectrometers already exist, they only monitor or measure individual samples at a time, making them inefficient in real-world applications. The multi-channel spectrometer developed by the Li team is capable of detecting up to eight different samples at a time using a common colorimetric assay called enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), in which ELISA identifies antibodies and color changes as Disease markers.
Although the Li team only used this smartphone spectrometer to test standard laboratory control samples, their device detection accuracy was as high as 99%. Today, the team is using their portable spectrometer in a real-world environment.
“Using our eight-channel spectrometer, we can make 8 different samples for the same test, or put one sample in 8 different wells for 8 different tests. This will increase our equipment. Efficiency.†Li has filed a provisional patent application for this study.
He said, "This spectrometer will be particularly suitable for clinics and hospitals that do not have on-site laboratories but have large numbers of samples, and are also useful for doctors practicing in foreign or remote areas."
The Li team is using the iPhone 5 for this device design. The team is working on an adjustable design that will be compatible with any smartphone.
