US develops high-degree of freedom new prosthetics Johns Hopkins University in Maryland has developed a prosthetic arm that allows for free control and sensory feedback. As one of the projects of the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in 2009, this revolutionary prosthesis is a complete limb system that allows control of eight degrees of freedom, far beyond the current prosthetic. It also includes a virtual environment for clinical testing, recording limb movements and control signals.
The researchers used the miniature version of the Rocket Booster on the space shuttle to complete the development, and developed a rocket-driven arm that is more powerful than traditional battery powered arms. The principle of the rocket drive arm is that the catalyst catalyzes the combustion of hydrogen peroxide to generate steam, and the supply of thrust drives the movement of the manipulator. Compared to a battery powered arm that is extremely short-lived, the rocket's drive arm's hydrogen peroxide is stored in a small tank that can be used continuously for 18 hours while maintaining thrust and functionality. However, a cooler is needed to dispose of waste heat and exhaust gas, and it is also possible to dissipate heat by means of "perspiration" of the pervious skin, and the amount of perspiration is equivalent to that of a normal person in summer.
In clinical use, the free control of the prosthesis and the combined sensory feedback indicate that the new prosthesis provides a more intuitive gripper with a natural feel compared to the original muscle remodeling.
The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's prosthetic program provides state-of-the-art medical and rehabilitation technology for amputee soldiers who are injured by landmines.
