Timely joints can be extended
A new study in Sweden recently published in the US “Journal of Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research†states that artificial hip replacement (THA) can not only improve the quality of life of patients, but also improve life expectancy.
In the new study, Dr. Peter Knock, PhD, an orthopaedic specialist at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and his team analyzed the postoperative survival of nearly 132,000 Swedish patients who underwent hip replacement between 1999 and 2012. The average age of these patients undergoing surgery was 68 years. In the average follow-up survey of 5.6 years, 16.5% of patients died. Data analysis found that the survival rate of patients undergoing artificial hip replacement was relatively higher compared with the same age and sex population in Sweden. In the first year after the surgery, the survival rate of these patients was 1% higher than that of the control group in the general population; their survival rates were higher by 3% and 2% in the 5 and 10 years after surgery. These differences were even more pronounced in patients diagnosed with primary osteoarthritis. In patients undergoing hip arthroplasty, joint wear caused 91% of surgeries.
However, the researchers also found that in patients with secondary arthritis caused by osteonecrosis, inflammatory arthritis, and other diseases, the survival rate after undergoing artificial hip replacement surgery was no higher than that of the general population. In addition, there are many complications, low levels of education, and singleness can reduce the chance of survival after joint replacement.
Dr. Knud analysis pointed out that the reasons for timely replacement of joints to prolong the life of patients may be many. For example, the successful operation made the patient recover better, increased confidence, and improved quality of life. In addition, the lifestyle of postoperative patients may also be healthier.
