Skin microneedle array non-invasive tracking immune response
The immune status and response are usually determined by analyzing circulating cells isolated from the blood. However, many immune processes and diseases rely on tissues that act on target organs to reside in immune cells, and these immune cells are not reflected in peripheral immune cells. In order to sample the cells resident in these tissues, researchers such as Anasua Mandal of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have designed a microneedle array that can be applied to the skin. These microneedles can be loaded with adjuvants and antigens of interest to attract responsive immune cells. Microneedles are non-invasive and can track immune responses for long periods of time; similar sampling can be performed on other tissues in the future. Tools such as these micro-needles can help scientists understand the immune response more accurately.
