Out of the Five Misconceptions of Drinking Water
When people are thirsty, they will drink water. However, according to the latest survey, there are many misunderstandings in drinking water. To this end, Prof. Li Fuxing from the Health Care Professional Drinking Water Committee of the China Medical Promotion Association reminded the public that drinking water should not enter the top five errors.
Misunderstanding 1: One-sided emphasis on minerals in water
Mineral water is popular with the public because it contains some of the minerals the body needs. However, many people think that the higher the mineral content, the better. This is not the case. Drinking water should contain moderate amounts of balanced minerals, but high mineral content does not fully account for the vigor of the water. On the contrary, when the mineral content in the water exceeds the standard, it will also harm human health. For example, when the content of iodide in drinking water is 0.02-0.05 mg/L, it is beneficial to human body, and when it is greater than 0.05 mg/L, it will cause iodine poisoning.
Myth 2: The purer the water, the better
Many people think that the purer the water, the better. In fact, long-term consumption of pure water can also lead to malnutrition. Drinking plenty of pure water will take away useful trace elements from the human body, thereby reducing the body's immunity and prone to diseases.
Since body fluids are slightly alkaline and pure water is weakly acidic, if you drink slightly acidic water for a long time, the environment will be destroyed. Li Fuxing also pointed out that long-term drinking pure water will increase the loss of calcium. For the elderly, especially elderly people with cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, children and pregnant women are less likely to drink for a long time.
Myth 3: Drink water to quench your thirst
When you are thirsty, you only need to drink water. Surveys have shown that people often neglect water nutrition and health care when they drink water.
Clean, safe and healthy water is the cheapest and most effective health product. Water can dilute nutrients such as protein, fat, carbohydrates, minerals, and inorganic salts in the body so that it can be easily absorbed by the body. Because all the cell's metabolism is inseparable from water, only let the cells drink enough water to promote metabolism, improve their own resistance and immunity.
Misunderstanding 4: Beverage = drinking water
According to the survey, many young people like to use drinks as drinking water. In response, Li Fuxing reminded us that water and beverages cannot be functionally equivalent. Because the beverage contains sugar and protein, a lot of flavors and colors are added, making it difficult for people to feel hunger after drinking. Therefore, using beverages instead of drinking water will not only reduce the appetite for the body but also reduce digestion and absorption.
Long-term consumption of carbonated beverages containing caffeine can cause excess calories, stimulate blood lipids, and increase cardiovascular burden. As a diuretic, caffeine can cause excessive urination and dehydration. In addition, for children, carbonated beverages can destroy the enamel of the outer layer of the teeth and cause tooth decay.
Myth 5: Medical water can be used as drinking water
At present, there are some drinking waters called “electrolyzed water†and “oxygen-enriched water†on the market. Li Fuxing pointed out that strictly speaking, these belong to medical water and cannot be used as drinking water for normal people.
Electrolyzed water decomposes water into cation water and anion water through electrolysis. Cationic water is medical water and must be consumed under the guidance of a doctor. Anion water is often used for disinfection and other aspects. Oxygen-enriched water refers to artificially adding more oxygen in purified water. This kind of oxygen molecules in the water will destroy the normal cell division and accelerate aging. The addition of pure oxygen to pure water, due to the molecular structure, is still a macromolecular water and is not easily absorbed by cells.
