After years of efforts, prevention and treatment of chronic hepatitis B in China has achieved results, but hepatitis B prevention and treatment is still an important public health problem. Experts said that strengthening the research on immunotherapy will greatly enhance the effect of hepatitis B prevention and treatment, and reduce the incidence of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Yang Xizhong, executive vice president of the China Hepatitis Prevention and Control Foundation, said that the current global treatment of hepatitis B drugs is basically divided into oral antiviral drugs and interferon drugs. The study found that after a year or so of treatment, the two types of drugs can only achieve the efficacy of inhibiting viral replication in hepatocytes in about 30% of patients.

He said that China has made major breakthroughs in the creation of new drugs for protein biology and developed biological drugs with immune functions. Strengthening medical investment and research on immunotherapy will hopefully solve the problem of long treatment time of hepatitis B, high recurrence rate of drug withdrawal, and limited efficiency.

According to data from the China Hepatitis Prevention and Control Foundation, in the past 20 years, with the hepatitis B vaccine included in the program immunization, the number of hepatitis B virus carriers in China has dropped significantly, and the hepatitis B virus carrying rate of children under 5 years old has dropped below 1%.
