Alcoholism accelerates osteoporosis

According to a new research report, bone loss caused by alcoholism is often overlooked. Dr. Denis Chacarcar of the Medical Center of the Veterans Administration of Omaha, Nebraska, United States, in a commentary on cell, animal and human research, described how alcoholism leads to bone loss, increased fracture risk and impact Healed after fracture. In an article in the monthly clinical and experimental study of alcoholism, Chacarcal pointed out that the main problem is that alcohol inhibits the normal formation of new bone.

Although excessive drinking has been shown to accelerate osteoporosis and bone fractures, there are also reports that moderate drinking may help protect bone mass—a small amount of alcohol helps new bone formation. Dr. Chacalcar believes that the results of heavy drinking may seem counter-productive. Throughout adulthood, there is a process of "remodeling" the bones. The so-called "osteoclasts" break down a few old bones, and the so-called "osteoblasts" will make up new bones. In healthy young adults, this process is usually balanced, so bone quality remains unchanged. There is evidence that the probability of bone loss is directly proportional to the amount of alcohol consumed, but it is not clear what the critical value of drinking is.

Most research reports on drinking caused by bone loss define “large” drinking as drinking more than 6 cups a day. However, Chalcalar pointed out that there is evidence that bone loss can occur in people who drink more than 3 glasses daily. According to Dr. Terence Donohue of the medical center, although many people know that heavy drinking is not good for the liver, there are not many people who know that drinking alcohol damages bones. He suggested that patients with fractures should not drink alcohol during healing.
