Swiss and German experts have successfully developed transgenic rice for preventing blindness in children
Swiss and German researchers have jointly developed genetically modified rice to prevent blindness in children. This result is considered a major breakthrough in this field. According to a report by Swiss International Radio recently, GM rice was jointly developed by researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and the University of Fribourg in Germany after nine years. They transplanted some of the daffodil genes into rice husks. The rice that grows is rich in beta-carotene and helps the body to synthesize vitamin A. Experts believe that lack of vitamin A is the main cause of blindness and malnutrition in children. The successful research of the new transgenic rice is undoubtedly an important achievement in the prevention of blindness in children. Bishop Ingriport, a biologist at the Zurich Institute of Technology and responsible for this research, said that eating large quantities of this GM rice does not cause excessive vitamin A intake.
