Maxim acquires Genasic's enhanced RF chip portfolio
Maxim announced the acquisition of Genusic, a radio frequency integrated circuit (RF IC) design company. Seeing that Long Range Evolution (LTE) will be the mainstream of wireless communications in the future, Maxim will further strengthen the RF chip portfolio through the acquisition of Genasic.
Maxim said that in order to expand its wireless communications business and strengthen its ability to design highly integrated LTE communications products, the company decided to acquire Genusic, a UK fabless RF IC design company. In addition to the original product lines of analog and mixed-signal ICs, Maxim will be able to increase the RF communication chip products of LTE and high-speed packet access (HSPA) technologies through this merger. line.
It is understood that Genasic was founded in 2009, and in 2011 introduced the first RF transceiver for HSPA and LTE communication technology using a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process of 65 nanometer (nm) process.
Genasic CEO Ashok Dhuna founded Synad Technologies, a fabless wireless local area network (WLAN) chip design company that was acquired by STMicroelectronics in 2003. Dhuna itself has considerable industry experience, covering a wide range of mobile communication technologies such as Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), WLAN, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) and LTE.
It is understood that Maxim also spent $130 million in 2011 to acquire SensorDynamics, a supplier of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) sensors, to expand the sensor product line; diversify investment risks through diversified acquisition strategies.
