Every winter farmers’ friends have stored in their hands the fertilizers that remained in the current year or purchased for the next spring. Some people do not understand the nature of chemical fertilizers, neglecting scientific management, and stacking them at random, which not only reduces fertilizer efficiency, but also causes danger.

Various fertilizers have different characteristics, some are acidic or alkaline, some are corrosive or toxic, some are easily hygroscopic agglomerate, some are volatile, and others are flammable and explosive. To this end, proper storage methods must be adopted according to the different characteristics of various fertilizers to avoid deterioration or reduce fertilizer efficiency.

Different types of chemical fertilizers should be kept in a single storehouse in the warehouse, marked on the label, indicate the name and chemical composition, and must not be mixed and stacked. Ammonium sulphate, ammonium hydrogen nitrate, ammonium chloride, and ammonia, etc., in the case of ammonium nitrogen fertilizer, when it is met with basic fertilizers such as ash, lime, and lime nitrogen, it is likely to cause nitrogen volatilization and reduce fertilizer efficiency; nitrate-nitrogen fertilizer such as ammonium nitrate and sodium nitrate, etc. The mixing of superphosphate causes the fertilizer to deliquesce, causing the nitrate nitrogen to gradually decompose and become run off by the gas, causing undue loss.

The chemical fertilizer should be stored in a dry place in the warehouse, waterproof and moisture-proof. Fertilizers are generally easily soluble in water, and are prone to agglomeration or loss of liquids after being exposed to moisture or water, severely affecting fertilizer efficiency. Ammonium nitrate, ammonium bicarbonate and other fertilizers have strong hygroscopicity and are easily deliquescent; fertilizers such as ammonium sulfate, ammonium chloride, and urea will form a lump after absorbing moisture, which will not only reduce fertilizer efficiency, but also cause troubles in application. When storing, be careful not to damage the packaging bag. Do not stack it outdoors. Indoors, use wooden planks to stand up and over 1 foot above the ground. Do not stack the same fertilizer too high.

Fertilizers should be stored at low temperature and away from light. Nitrogen fertilizers are afraid of heat. Nitrogen will turn into ammonia gas when running out, reducing its effectiveness. In particular, ammonium nitrate is also flammable and explosive. Never mix it with gasoline, alcohol, sulfur, or other flammable materials in a warehouse to avoid accidents. Lime-nitrogen is poisonous, and it expands in volume after being exposed to moisture and releases toxic gas. In case of high temperatures, it can cause fire or explosion. Therefore, safety must be taken care of.

Don't put rations, seeds, feed, tobacco, etc. in the same warehouse as chemical fertilizers, so as not to smell, deteriorate, or cause poisoning after eating. The warehouse where chemical fertilizers are stored must be kept dry. Avoid the light and ventilation. Do not rely on the walls and the ground. Raise the height by 2 to 3 feet to prevent moisture absorption and reduce fertilizer efficiency.
