The American Academy of Pediatrics began to provide the public with suggestions for children to drink juice from 2001. The latest version of the "Children's Drinking Juice Guide" is available online on May 22.
Previously, the American Academy of Pediatrics had always recommended not to give fruit juice to children under 6 months of age. But they said that given the growing evidence that drinking juice may cause obesity and cavities in children, it was decided to raise the age of not drinking juice from 6 months to 1 year.
One of the two main authors of the guide, Melvin Hyman, professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, said: "Parents may think that juice is healthy, but it may contain more sugar and calories and is not suitable for replacing fresh fruit. Older children can drink the right amount of juice, but children under the age of 1 need absolutely no juice."
"I didn't find any reason to support 6 to 12 months of children drinking juice," said Steven Abrams, another lead author of the guide, director of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas at Dale School of Medicine. "We recommend In this age group, breastfeeding or formula should be used. Juice does not have any necessary or beneficial effects, so we made this adjustment."

The amount of fruit juice to drink is also controlled
This guideline recommends limiting the fruit juice consumption of children under 18 years of age.
For children under 1-3 years old, the daily juice intake is no more than half a cup (4 ounces, approximately 120 milliliters);
For children aged 4-6 years, daily juice intake should not exceed 3/4 cups (4-6 ounces, approximately 120-180 ml);
Juveniles 7 to 18 years old, the daily juice intake no more than 1 cup (8 ounces, about 240 ml).
What is 240 ml? In the market, a can of Coca-Cola is 330 ml.
Abrams said: "Fresh fruit is less sugary than fruit juice. We want children to learn how to eat fresh things. If you think juice is equivalent to fruit, then you are completely wrong."
The New York Times took Apple for example: half a cup (4 ounces) of apple chips contains 1.5 grams of fiber, 30 calories and 5.5 grams of sugar; and half a cup (4 ounces) of apple juice contains 0 grams of fiber, 30 calories and 13 Sugar.
"The New York Times" concluded that fresh fruit contains more dietary fiber, less calories and sugar than juice, and thus less likely to cause obesity and tooth decay in children.
This guide also makes the following recommendations:
1. Don't give your child a bottle or a portable sipper cup for juice. This will allow them to drink juice all day long.
2. Do not drink juice before going to bed.
3. Parents should allow their children to develop the habit of eating fresh fruits.
4. Regardless of the age of the child, it is highly recommended not to drink unpasteurized juice products.
5. When the body is dehydrated or diarrhea, it is not suitable for drinking juice.
6. Children who take certain drugs cannot drink grapefruit juice, which may affect the drug's medicinal properties.
7. Do not mistakenly believe that not drinking juice will damage the child's dietary nutrition. Liquid intake is enough for infants and young children, breastmilk or formula. For older children, low-fat/skim milk and water are also sufficient.
Why drink fruit juice for no good?
